The Kilkenny Cats Animation

This was a project with two parts.

In the first part, we were given a random British nursery rhyme and asked to illustrate them. Illustrations must be logically connected to the story and should advance the plot as well as enhance it. Using a set of marks and dingbats in black and white, were obligatory while creating the illustrations.

My nursery rhyme was the Kilkenny which refers to the deep divisions between the two city boroughs, Irishtown and Englishtown. Because the rights and duties of the two townships hadn’t been made clear by statute this led to three centuries of dispute which beggared both of them. The rhyme allegorically connects this story with a cruel game involving tying the tails of cats together and allowing them to fight to the death. Due to this reason, I gave my cats an Irish hat, a monocle and different colors to represent those two cities. Then, I used cinematic camera positions and exaggerated perspectives to intensify the storytelling.

In the second part, we were asked to create a short animation for our nursery rhymes using our illustrations. We were allowed to create and use additional frames. Typography had to be kinetic and sound effects were a must.

I wanted to create an atmosphere of an old man telling a story to his grandchildren for my animation. Thus, the style of the animation is like a tale. I narrated the rhyme by myself according to this concept and I used the fireplace, paper turning and hard covered book sounds to charm the audience. Also, I added a few more animation friendly scenes.
